The Internet has made the whole fashion industry upside down and pressurized. The fashion try to react to it. With new concepts, the change of chief designers, ever faster production cycles. Often the quality of the collections suffers and especially the creativity of designs. And this is where the concept of the European Fashion Award – Fash 2016 affects. Imaginative, pioneering designs with advanced technologies that were filed from more than 150 students from 28 countries. Six collections from the fields of “Students” and “Graduate Projects” have made it to the hallowed halls of the New Museum. Along with the prize money of the Award there is the possibility a first contact in the industrial manufacture.

Highlight No. 1 from the European Fashion Award

“Beauty and Duty” is the title of the collection of Flora Sophie Taubner of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. The central message of the winning collection of the European Fashion Award: Clothing wins value by Patina. Her goal is to inspire consumers for a more conscious use of clothing. Inspired by the aprons of “Trümmerfrauen” after 1945 and Christian Dior’s “New Look” (1947). The result: elaborately draped fabrics and extreme waists, which recall the rebirth of Couture. Delicate dresses and blouses, Copperbelts, symbolizing the patina. The aprons with lasered rod pattern, the designer incidentally made with Lefa – a material made from recycled leather scraps.

Highlight No. 2 from the European Fashion Award

“The Sons of Shiva” is the collection of Aylin Tomta, a student at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld in the 4th semester. Starting from the fact that boundaries blur and an international identity arises, the designer combined elements of hip-hop scene with hand-cut ornaments taken from the Indian Rabari and PVC leather. Elements of all countries and cultures mingle in these designs, and can also melt fashion limits.

Highlight No. 3 from the European Fashion Award

The Germans and their love for functional clothing Rani Maria Lange took – also from the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld – as an opportunity to create a collection entitled “Über Funktion”. With questions like “How to combine fashion and function?” And “What statement does a functional clothing sets?” she questioned with her 24-piece men´s collection the principle of “form follows function”. But she has created with typical functional fabrics such as fleece, stretch and softshell functional fashion collection at the highest level.
