The country life<\/strong> makes me always happy . I enjoy the lovely quiet environment<\/strong>, the lush meadows and forests, the soothing cows mooing, the rustling of the trees, the reassuring rattle of tractors (and in recent days, the hum of the harvester that use the short hours between showers to designate the meadows). Here the clocks<\/strong> tick a little slower<\/strong> than in the bustle of the city. Just lovely! I love this time out<\/strong>, indulging the sweet idleness, doing extensive forest walks<\/strong>, corporate fishing trips<\/strong>, have finally time to play with my kids, collecting sticks and stones, build hiding places and – which is unfortunately rare enough – time to read. Accordingly thoroughly I’m looking out the titles that accompany me. This time I decided A Month in the Country<\/strong> – because the blurb excited me and the cover design is not unimportant for me and because I never was disappointed by a DuMont title.<\/p>\n

The British masterpiece is finally available in German<\/p><\/div>\n

Tom Birkin has served in World War and was abandoned after his return as a war veteran<\/strong> from his wife. Stuttering and plagued by facial twitches, the traumatized man is looking for peace and the simple country life in Yorkshire<\/strong> and is looking for a peaceful place to recover, to switch off, to start anew. When he gets out of the train in the northern English Oxgodby where the trained conservator has to recover a medieval fresco in the village church, a new life begins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The closer he gets to the artwork, the more Tom Birkin finds back to himself. <\/div><\/div><\/span><\/h4>\n

Retired and closed<\/strong> Tom Birkin goes for the tedious work in the church. Here he can hide<\/strong> behind the thick walls of the church and his work. But the closer he comes to the artwork, the more he opens his environment. To the villagers<\/strong>. And maybe even a love<\/strong> …<\/p>\n

With “A Month in the Country” J.L. Carr has created a small masterpiece<\/strong> of modern English literature, that was nominated in 1980 for the Booker Prize<\/strong> and finally also appears in German. Once in hand, I could hardly put this moving tribute<\/strong> to the love<\/strong> and life<\/strong> down. The pretty little book is read quickly, but his draft resonates long after.<\/p>\n
