I did not want to deprive you of these three Slow-Pick highlights

ANZEIGE

That would be appalling, because in my living room something would be missing if my new favorite calendar would not adorn the (again painted!) gray wall. And what should I browse if I was looking for a new favorite drink (with Gin!). And the Lifestyle Diary of my former ELLE colleague would be half as much fun on the iPad. In this sense: Here three Slow-Pick highlights for cultural friends – in the hope that beside me there are still a few enthusiastic oldschoolers!

3 Slow-pick tips for culture connoisseurs

Slow-Pick # 1: Calendar 2017: Telling Time by Mehrdad Zaeri

For those of you, who follow my Instagram account, these wonderful illustrations may be familiar. This is because I always post the great drawings with the profound ideas of Mehrdad Zaeri. The 46-year-old illustrator has entered my life by chance. In the form of a wall calendar, which has been hanging in an office at the ELLE for almost four years, without turning around. Fscrolled up on the May-Page. The 3rd of May (my birthday) was highlightet with the text “Day of the lauded good-natured”. Well, what can I say – there seemed to be some connection between the author, who can look through my façade. When, after a few years, we had to leave this office because of confusing renovations, the calendar should be discarded. Of course, I saved him from this completely undeserved end and took him home with me. There he now hangs in my living room and still enjoys me every day. Now the eye-catcher gets a successor.

24 dreamlike illustrations with quotations by Martin Buber

Inspired by quotations from the book “I and Thou” by the religious philosopher Martin Buber, Mehrdad Zaeri and the young illustrator Marie Wolf with 24 wonderful drawings give the opportunity to think about encounters, strangeness, togetherness in an increasingly approaching world. And Mehrdad Zaeri, who escaped with his family from Iran to Germany in 1986, knows what it is to be refugee, not to speak the language of the new homeland, to find himself in a foreign culture …

On my living room wall would be missing something if the beautiful as well as clever calendar would not be there any more

PS: The new calendar has now taken the place of his predecessor in the living room. But the old one got a place of honor over my desk.

Slow-Pick # 2: Diary “My Lifestyle Diary” by Iris Olschewski

In my time as cultural editor at the ELLE, we called for the trend “coloring books” for 2016, since last year already at the Frankfurt Book Fair numerous titles of this kind were found. At that time, I wondered who had the time to paint books. But that should be very reassuring. Now my old colleague Iris, whose beautiful illustrations I have always liked very much, has created a own coloring book at Prestel. And Iris Diary is – as the title suggests – more than just a book to paint. It is a lovingly made companion through the four seasons. It leaves room for personal thoughts, small secrets, constantly stimulates (and notes down), quotes from e.g. Coco Chanel with her unforgettable lifestyle (“Begin the Moment you decide to be yourself”), holds selected recipes (hmm, rose raspberry punch), interior tips at hand. And Iris has a lot in store for that.

Slow-Pick # 3: Gin Tonic – The ultimate guide for the perfect mix of Frédéric du Bois & Isabel Boons

Okay, I LOVE Gin Tonic. For many years, there is no other drink I would order. And whoever thinks Gin is just Gin is deceiving himself, of course. Because Gin has a long tradition and therefore an exciting story (ever thought about who actually invented this wonderful spirit). And with great curiosity, I always discover new varieties (yes, next to the Bombay Sapphire and the Tanquerai, there are countless other Gin beads) that have sprouted from the earth like mushrooms for several years. Fortunately also some local distillates.

Gin and Tonic have saved more English lives and minds than all the doctors in the Empire – Winston Churchill.

Which tonic to which gin fits? Whether the lime or the cucumber (I love my G & T with an orange slice and confuse so many bartenders) is the ideal companion. In any case, this handbook with its 400 Gin varieties and 50 Tonics from all corners of the world is an indispensable standard work for every gin lover and hobby bartender.
